Week 4: The Road to Sydney

I can’t believe I’m only writing about week four of my travels. The nature of time has shifted significantly since I set out. So much happens in some days, they feel like weeks. I’m sitting here in a hotel in Bangkok updating my blog with travel from just over a week ago, and it already feels like months have passed.

I purchased tickets to fly to Bangkok from Sydney so I could visit Sydney before I left Australia. I’d never been, and kept hearing from people who have been that I need to go. Bernie suggested that we spend a few days driving up the coast and visit some of the towns/sites along the way. I thought that was a great idea. Fortunately, Cherie was able to take (most) of the week off and was able to come along with us (although she did some work in the back seat of the car).

The trip up the coast was stunning; the trees, the beaches, and the neat little towns along the way. We saw wildlife too, although for most of the early part of the drive the dead animal count was higher than the live animal count. I counted at least four wombats, feet in the air alongside the road. They’re tough and fast, but apparently not too smart when it comes to crossing roads.

I’m always up for a dip in the ocean, and was constantly pestering Bernie to drive by the beach whenever we were near one. My favorite swim (and Cherie’s too I think) was at the Bermagui Blue Pool. It is a beautiful man-made pool that is filled/refreshed with sea-water during high-tides. When we were there the tide was pretty high, and it was exhilarating watching the big waves come in and toss the pool water like a washing machine as we fought to stay above the churn. On our way out, on the other side of some rocks from us, we watched a bob of seals bobbing happily along in the surf as well.

Another beautiful beach we visited was Pebbly Beach, tucked at the feet of Murramarang National Park. It’s a little hidden paradise, with campsites and even a tiny general store. The drive down the switchbacks to the beach was under the outstretched canopy of beautiful old gum tree giants. The beach itself was stunning and there were what looked like some really nice day hikes down the beach and around the park. To top it off, I got my first good look at a live kangaroo who was lounging on the beach (I think this was the day the live animal count finally surpassed the roadkill count). Unfortunately we didn’t have time to hang out here as we needed to be in Sydney by dinner time, but we all added it to our list of future places to stay.

Other highlights of the trip included meat pies at the grumpiest town in Victoria, the lookout on Canbewerra Mountain, and a short walk to Fitzroy Falls. All in all it was a beautiful three day drive, with many treasured moments spent with Cherie and Bernie.

What’s this? A coffee for ants? (It’s called a Piccolo).

Thanks Mark. Sometimes it can be a challenge to find a good place to write that has reliable WiFi. I’m struggling with that right now in fact, down here on the beach in Cha-am. Glad you are enjoying the blog!
